Why Physical Activity Affects Hair Transplant Recovery
Exercise affects recovery through several mechanisms: increased heart rate and blood pressure elevate scalp blood flow, potentially disturbing graft stabilization in the first week. Sweating introduces moisture and bacteria to healing scalp incisions. Bending forward increases intracranial pressure and blood flow to the scalp.
The Week-by-Week Return to Training Timeline
- Days 1-7: complete rest from all exercise
- Day 7-14: light walking at conversational pace only
- Week 3-4: light cardio (brisk walking, very light cycling)
- Week 4-6: moderate gym work, but avoid heavy compound lifts
- Week 6-8: normal training except contact sports
- Month 3: full return to contact sports and high-impact activities
Swimming and Water Sports
Avoid all swimming and water sports for 4-6 weeks minimum. Chlorinated pool water can irritate healing scalp tissue. Natural open water carries bacterial risk. Competitive swimmers should plan their procedure to allow a minimum 6-week break from water training.
Protecting the Scalp During Exercise
During the first 3 months, protect the recipient area from direct sun exposure. Loose-fitting hats are appropriate from day 14. Avoid tight headbands or caps that apply pressure to the transplanted zone for the first month. Wipe sweat away gently rather than allowing it to accumulate.
Planning Your Procedure Timing as an Athlete
Schedule the procedure at the start of an off-season or training break. Give yourself minimum 3 weeks before any important competition. Discuss your specific training program with your clinic during consultation.
