Standard FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

FUE is the foundational modern technique. Individual follicular units are extracted from the donor area using a small circular punch (0.6–1.0mm), then implanted into channels created in the recipient area.

It leaves no linear scar, has a quick recovery, and in experienced hands produces natural results. Most other techniques are variations of FUE β€” the main variables are what creates the recipient channels and how grafts are implanted.

Sapphire FUE

Sapphire FUE uses synthetic sapphire crystal blades instead of steel to create recipient channels. Sapphire's smoother surface creates cleaner, more precise incisions β€” reducing tissue trauma, speeding healing, and allowing denser graft packing.

Most premium Turkish clinics now use sapphire as standard. The difference in outcomes vs standard FUE is real but incremental β€” the biggest driver of results is still surgeon experience and graft placement density.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)

DHI uses a Choi implanter pen β€” a hollow needle that simultaneously creates the channel and implants the graft. This eliminates the time grafts spend outside the body, potentially improving survival rates.

DHI also gives more precise control over angle and direction of implanted hairs. The downside: DHI is more expensive (each pen has limited use) and slower, making it less suited for very large graft sessions.

Which Technique Should You Choose?

For most patients, Sapphire FUE offers the best balance of results, cost, and recovery. DHI is worth the premium if targeting the hairline or crown specifically, where directional precision makes a visible difference.

Hybrid FUE+DHI uses DHI for the hairline and FUE for bulk coverage β€” sensible for larger sessions. Ask your clinic not just which technique they offer, but how many procedures per year they perform with it. Experience matters more than equipment.
